Fishing Report :  Monday 7 December 2009   (The lake is still just open but the entrance is now shallow after the strong winds)

Estuary/River

The weather has been good for the past week.  The fishing has also been good.  Bream are still being caught in reasonable numbers in the river although the lake and channel are fishing best.  In the channel, there have been large yellow fin bream come in from the ocean.  In the lake, the bream are being caught on bait and on vibes and plastics.  I caught two good bream at the river mouth this afternoon on vibes in about 20 minutes and the bait fishermen nearby also landed several in that time.  The channel and just inside the lake have been producing really good luderick up to 2 kg and they have been fun on light gear.  Most are caught on sandworm although some have been caught on vibes  but they are not as numerous as they were earlier in the year.  Catches of 4-10 bream per day were typical for each fisherman.  Some days the small bream are a nuisance as I can verify when my mate from NSW and I caught 30 or so before we landed a size fish.  We did eventually find a good spot and had a good day.  We must have cut at least 50 small fish off for the day.  Some others had similar problems while another chap in the channel fishing sandworm caught some magnificant fish and lost quite a few on light gear.  He only caught one undersized fish for the day.  The Entrance was wide but appears to be very shallow now and is probably about to close if it has not already.   There have been some tailor caught in the channel trolling lures.  Fishing vibes seems to be not producing the catches of several months ago.  The Flathead are picking up with a few recent catches.  There are reports of good silver bream being caught in the Channel on plastics.  There are no reports of Salmon in the Channel at present and we seem to have missed them this year.

Local sandworm is now available at the shop together with frozen local prawns.

Those who have a good day should remember the bag limit applies per day and should not go and catch more of the same species of fish in the afternoon if they have already reached the bag limit.  Several anglers have recently been fined for going out twice and catching more than their bag limit.  $ 1200 each I hear with action still pending.  There is enough variety of species of fish for people to target a different species once they reach the bag limit.  Remember we want our children and grand children to enjoy the Bemm.

Surf Fishing Report

In the past few weeks, the salmon have been on the bite at the beaches and they are taking lures, blue bait and blue surf poppers.  Several local anglers have been going regularly throwing metal lures and catching a few salmon most times.   Another angler has been using a popper and bait with good success.  If you walk between Gunnai Beach and Pearl Pt there are some delightful gutters about halfway if you're wanting some exercise as well as throwing a few lures around. Some good Taylor have been caught with the salmon using a wire trace and white bait.

A few goo gummy shark have been caught on the beaches in the past few weeks.

Don't forget to get the latest tide information from the link on the Bemm River Angling Club main web site which gives a one week tide report for Eden to which you need to add 10 minutes to get the Bemm River Beaches.
